Analysis & comment on topics in the radio media

"Exploited"

Did you know that favourite cartoon animated strip programme The Simpson's, produced in Los Angles USA is individually frame coloured by hand in Korea?

On return post production voice tracks are added back in the States

Apparently the process of hand painting in each frame can be bought at a 10th of the price than in USA or Europe, it's also considerably cheaper than using state of the art computer generated visuals

The Koreans are probably grateful for the work but is it exploitation?

The Simsons

The same might be said of many radio stations who must have all but exhausted the goodwill of a great number of contributors. Fair enough perhaps for short term festival, anniversary or special occasion projects. Everyone's pleased to throw in their lot to help out alongside local professionals also not adverse to lending a hand in the short term

But we've a new tier of radio stations that survive solely on goodwill. These are the Community stations who it's dictated will derive their income from sponsorship, donations, a little advertising & the deep pockets of the licence holders. Therefore they have insufficient funds to actually pay anyone

Surely the question long term is will they survive as hobbyist contributors who play for no pay ask "what's in it for me am I being exploited?"
