The
97' x 23' wooden craftwas built for the British Admiralty in 1945 as a supply boat, named 'The Deep Diver' she was acquired in 1977 by a broadcasting group who had aspirations to provide music radio for British tourists in Spain
The
sparse financedscheme had Chris Carey, Robbie Dale, Bob Noakes and Dick Palmer were behind 'Sunshine Radio'
Secretly
fitted outin Belfast as a radio ship with a pair of low powered FM transmitters and twin lattice masts, passed off as lighting towers for film making
The ship left Belfast for Portugal but suffered damage at sea, and was towed into the Scilly Islands
Funds ran out
and it was realised that the vessel was too small for a radio ship, so the project and ship were abandoned
In early 1978 the 'Deep Diver' was back in Belfast
advertised for salewith a price tag of £26,000, eventually selling to George Russell for £20,000
The forward lattice transmitter mast being the only remaining remnant of her former time as a Offshore Radio Vessel
Things were to get worst, taking possession on a dark wet night it was discovered many of the fixtures and fitting had been stripped
Undeterred the shambolic adventure was to continue in a similar vein until the vessel went aground in Espinho, Portugal and became a total loss
The vessel is now said to have been integrated into a landing stage at Espinho
